The first of these two men, John Palmer, started off as a singer in the provincial theatres of Liverpool and later London. By 1770, he had become an actor and manager, setting up the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre, built as a private theatre for friends and acquaintances, and where the plays of Shakespeare, Sheridan and others, were performed, free to patrons who were invited to attend in their evening dress. Palmer's innovations included offering Shakespeare at his theatre for a penny, and even allowing a female character in Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy. He was also the first to offer Shakespeare in a shortened form, as was then common in the provinces, by including short extracts from it in his plays. Palmer's Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre was closed in 1778 and demolished in 1780, but he continued to manage amateur theatricals with small, select audiences in various locations in London, none near enough to the more respectable theatres to be likely to attract the same kind of clientele.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
